Happy Birthday to us, Happy Birthday to us, Happy Birthday dear Up and Under, Happy Birthday to us!
It seems almost impossible to believe, but 29 years ago today Andy started Up and Under at 44 Argyle Road in Southampton, before moving back to Crewe.
Our first specialist access job – wet well inspection
To all of you who have worked with us, for us, supplied us or employed us, we thank you very much and look forward to sharing our 30th year and many more into the future.
And for those of you who haven’t been around quite as long, here’s the tag line from our earliest stationery.
Yes we really did say that!
Tim and Danny were recently given the full paparazzi treatment during their inspection of the Anderton Boat Lift near Northwich. The struture, which was constructed in 1875, was receiving a detailed examination from the team of engineers from Up and Under. Local press photographers spent a morning getting shots from every angle.
The coverage can be seen here:
Anderton Boat Lift is just one of a long list of historical structures we have had the pleasure of working on, including: Menai Bridge, the Saltash Bridge, Pontcysyllte aqueduct, Tower Bridge, plus castles, stately homes, churches and underground antiquities.
We are always happy to help with your ‘old stuff’ as well as any new things you need inspecting, testing or surveying.
……. you might learn something. Certainly that was the experience for 22 youngsters from The Cheshire Young Carers when they visited Delamere Forest on a trip funded by the Up and Under Foundation. Arriving in the morning they were given instruction in how to build a cozy woodland shelter. After a picnic lunch they ventured into the forest with a knowledgeable guide to look for home of rabbits, squirrels and badgers. Of course at some point they managed to find a stream to jump into and much merriment was had.
At the end of the day, having said their farewells to the Centre and Foundation staff everyone got onto the bus, and probably a crafty snooze.
Another great day. The Up and Under Foundation has grants available to support young people, check out www.upandunderfoundation.org
We have supported the Cheshire Young Carers for a number of years now. For details of the work they undertake look here

Details cand booking is via the CIHT site at http://www.ciht.org.uk/en/events/index.cfm/north-wales-branch-evening-meeting-the-commercial-engineer/2015-05-19
As usual Andy will bring his lively presentation style to bear on issues that all engineers who aspire to success need to understand. We are all very focused on problem solving and getting the calcs right, but in the end it is all about money!
I was shown this today and thought it had to be shared immediately. Hey, we are superstars! I’m sure there’s no big problem with Friday Fun on Thursdays occaisionally, is there? have a look at this video about infrastructure inspectors, we are filmstars at last.
Heroes at last!
I love the idea that nothing exciting will happen unless we get it wrong. Is this the breakthough asset management professionals have been waiting for? Will bridge inspectors be the new special forces operatives? OK we can hope, but for now injoy the video.
Followers of Up and Under know that we are really superheroes!
Inspecting Chirk Aquaduct
Concrete testing is a useful tool for a building engineer when assessing the condition of high rise buildings. During this project on a university hall of residence we undertook a cover survey ofthe concrete elements, assessed the carbonation penetration and took dudt samples from the concrete for later lab testing for chloride ion content.
From here you can see the problems
Aditionally we carried out a hands on inspection of the building fabric. The results of our inspection were provided to the client in digital format, accompanied by CAD drawings.
If you would like more information on our testing services you can find them here. Or call us on 01270 589615
During this project our team carried out NDT in the form of ultrasonic thickness measurement on various elements of Chain bridge. Rope access is a great way of getting skilled engineers to get a close look at structures. It is important to remember that the skill engineer is the really important bit.
Recording findings above the river
In addition we removed the end plates from the transverse beams, cleaned then measured the cross sectional dimensions ofthe hangers.
Removing beam ends to permit measurement
Once the measurements had been taken we painted the cleaned areas to provide protection. These works were undertaken with minimal disruprion or additional loading on the structure.
