Eric Swan was, to many, one of the greatest influences in their lives. Stating that he was a teacher at Crewe Boys Grammar School then a Lecturer at South Cheshire College misses so much. It was the enthusiasm with which he guided and encouraged so many, often, through sport and outdoor activities that made him stand out. Voted Wistonian of the Year and having sports facilities named after him were just two of the tributes that came his way during his lifetime.
We have created this bursary both to remember Eric and to create a legacy which, we feel, is fitting to the man he was. We are grateful to Eric's family in supporting our efforts.
The Eric Swan Bursary has been established to provide assistance with funding for young people living in the Crewe area who would otherwise be excluded from taking part in outdoor adventurous activities. The funds are administered through the Conway Centre in Anglesey. Access to the funds will only be available through schools, colleges and youth groups who are attending the centre on courses or day visits. Individuals should not directly seek funds from the Conway Centre or The Up and Under Foundation. The Bursary will be available from March 2010.

The details of the Bursary are set out below:
- The Up and Under Foundation has established the Eric Swan Bursary.
- The Bursary will be known as the “Eric Swan Bursary” and should be acknowledged as being presented by “The Up and Under Foundation”
- The Bursary takes the form of income from an invested sum and as such the available funds may vary from time to time.
- The Foundation and Eric’s family wish to make the Bursary available to youngsters who wish to attend the Conway Centre to take part in adventurous activities, this decision will be reviewed at least annually.
- The Conway Centre will manage the allocation of the Bursary in that they will select the candidates to receive the monies. The Bursary award (or awards) will be made to a young person who meets the criteria of the Foundation as set out on the Community page, but with an emphasis placed on financial hardship getting in the way of access to beneficial experience.
- The recipient must live or go to school/college in a CW postcode area.
- Initially we will only consider people below the age of 19.
- We expect some form of written communication from recipients after they have visited the centre explaining either what they did or how they think they benefited, acceptable forms will include letter, email or report. We reserve the right to use statements from this communication, anonymously, for purposes of promotion or any other purpose as seen fit by the trustees, also to pass on such communication to the Swan family.
